Department of Exercise & Sport Science

MA Exercise and Sport (Sport and Leisure History) provides a focus for research into nineteenth and twentieth century sport and leisure, and is actively engaged in employing all historical approaches, including oral history, biography, and prosopography, to uncover the individual and collective lives of the men and women involved in sporting and leisure activities.

Intellectually challenging and discipline-focused, the MA Exercise and Sport (Sport and Leisure History) programme prepares students for a career in sports history, education and socio-cultural studies at an advanced level.

Taught by leading researchers within the field of sports history, an interdisciplinary perspective is encouraged to explore the past. This programme is highly valued by employers and the wider sport and leisure community with many of our graduates holding senior positions in research, Higher Education, and advisory roles within professional sports clubs, archival collections and museums.

Students will aslo have access to the Sports and Leisure History Research Archive. This archive contains over 1,000 books, journals and magazines dating back to the early 19th century. Based initially on an extensive private collection, purchased from a founding member of the British Society of Sports History, the archive has been expanded to include sporting newspapers and magazines that have been digitised with the support of funding from Manchester City Football Club.

Career options after the course

Master's graduates have the potential to progress into research programmes and positions, sport science and coaching within a sport governing body or with the English Institute of Sport, Sport Scotland and Sport Wales, or Sports Coach UK. In addition there are growing opportunities in the health domain and in the development and manufacture of sports equipment. There are also consultancy and teaching opportunities at institutes of further and higher education.
