Foundation Year
By choosing to study our Foundation Year you will join a friendly and stimulating environment in which you will be encouraged to achieve your full potential in both your academic work and your future career. We pride ourselves on our informal and supportive relationships with our students. You will be assigned a personal tutor who will be responsible for your academic and personal progress throughout your studies. Along with this scheduled one-to-one support, you will receive regular feedback and guidance from your module tutors on your research, writing and study skills.
You will critically examine how sport is organised and delivered and explore opportunities for improving the industry. You will also learn how sport can have an impact on wider social issues, such as education, public health and wellbeing, physical activity and community development.
This is an interdisciplinary programme, drawing on a range of socio-cultural theories to examine processes of sport and sport development. As you progress through the course you will move from a UK-based standpoint to embrace a more international perspective, drawing on staff expertise and current practice. In doing so you will gain knowledge on how sport works, be able to question current structures and generate evidence-based ideas and projects focusing on the current sport development industry.
Thanks to LJMU's links with over 450 different employers in the North West alone, we can offer superb work placement opportunities in all three years of the course. We are a corporate member of the Chartered Institute of Management in Sport and Physical Activity, and are linked to the United Kingdom Sports Development Network, the lead consortium providing links between theory and practice in the field. We are also actively involved in many local sport partnerships including many Football in the Community schemes and a number of National Governing Bodies of Sport.
Plus from September 2017, IM Marsh students will have access to a free strength and conditioning studio onsite. All LJMU students are also entitled to apply for free off-peak membership for Lifestyles Fitness Centres across Liverpool and discounted peak-rate membership is also available so you can keep yourself active alongside your sport studies.
