Lean Six Sigma (LSS) is a powerful methodology for achieving process efficiency and effectiveness which results in enhanced customer satisfaction and improved bottom line results. It aims to achieve improvements in the most economical manner possible and is focused on reducing waste in business processes.
This programme aims to develop high-calibre graduates with an in-depth understanding of strategic, tactical and operational issues.
The programme will build understanding of the tools and techniques of Lean Six Sigma methodologies and demonstrate the tangible and quantifiable results these bring to the bottom line. Students will learn state-of-the-art concepts, methods, principles, tools and techniques, relating to quality and process improvement for a broad range of organisations, such as manufacturing, service, public sector and third sector, set within a global context.
Students also have the option to be accredited with the Green Belt and Black Belt in Lean Six Sigma (see the Professional Recognition section below for more details).

Green Belt certification
Students successfully completing the MSc Lean Six Sigma for Operational Excellence gain Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification from the Institute of Six Sigma Professionals. The Lean Six Sigma Green Belt competence prepares individuals within an organisation to apply Lean / Six Sigma tools and techniques to define, measure, analyse, improve and control processes within any organisational setting irrespective of its nature and size.
Black Belt certification
Upon completion of the MSc students are also offered the opportunity to undertake Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification. To achieve Black Belt certification students must undertake a Black Belt project which involves working with a company to resolve a live issue. It is the responsibility of students to identify a company for the project - Heriot-Watt University assists in shaping the scope of the project and provides support during the project. Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification is awarded by the Institute of Lean Six Sigma Professionals and Heriot-Watt University. The Black Belt project normally takes 8-12 months to complete.
