About Sustainability (Senior Leader Apprenticeship+) at Cranfield School of Management

The role of a sustainability professional is evolving from a specialist to a sustainability-literate change agent with a key role in setting and delivering organisational strategy that supports long-term organisational resilience and success.

The Sustainability MSc apprenticeship brings together academics from our School of Water, Energy and Environment and School of Management to create a holistic, multidisciplinary learning experience. The course is designed in consultation with industry to equip sustainability professionals and leaders in organisations of all sizes with this critical mix of technical and management skills. It will deepen your knowledge of the theory and practice of organisational sustainability, and help you build the personal competencies you need to lead and manage change towards improved sustainability performance.

The course meets the requirements of the Level 7 Sustainability Business Specialist Apprenticeship Standard, enabling graduates to perform effectively as sustainability professionals in a competitive and fast changing environment.

On completion of the programme you will acquire a Sustainability Business Specialist Apprenticeship, a master’s degree and professional recognition as a Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP) and Practitioner Member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) or Chartered Environmentalist (Full Member of the IEMA) depending on your level of experience prior to the course.

Entry requirements

We welcome applications from talented candidates from all backgrounds. Candidates are normally high potential, early-career managers with one to five years’ post-qualification experience in any sector.

Candidates normally possess a first or second class UK honours degree (or international equivalent). Alternatively we will consider a professional qualification (such as CIMA, ACA, ACCA) together with a minimum of five years’ post-qualification work experience.

Other relevant qualifications, together with significant experience, may also be considered.

Professional experience and personal qualities are equally important to us and each application is considered on its individual merit.

Before an application is submitted for our Sustainability Business Specialist Apprenticeship programme, prospective students need to have approval from the employer. Students have to be employed and your employer has to agree to provide you with the support and supervision to carry out your job role and your apprenticeship. It is a requirement of the Apprenticeship Funding Rules that you are working at least 50% of your contracted hours in England.

A three-way agreement needs to be put in place between Cranfield University, the employer and the student.

What students think about Cranfield School of Management

Alejandro Palacios Strooman (2019 Corporate Sustainability MSc)

Testimonial from Alejandro Palacios Strooman (2019 Corporate Sustainability MSc), student at Cranfield School of Management

"During the Management and Corporate Sustainability MSc, we attended a lot of talks with people who are involved with sustainability, people that had a lot of experience, people that were in senior roles in private companies and organisations, people that were pioneers of pushing sustainability into corporate organisations. To hear those people talk about their experiences of sustainability transformation that is required in society was really inspiring."

Cristina Gavilan (2019 Strategic Marketing MSc)

Testimonial from Cristina Gavilan (2019 Strategic Marketing MSc), student at Cranfield School of Management

"Two months after completing the Strategic Marketing MSc, I was offered a Marketing Executive role in a company that manufactures British vitamin supplements. And now, after seven months in the company, I have been promoted to a Marketing Manager. I had to design a three-year Marketing Strategy for the brand; this is the reason why the Marketing Consultancy Project as well as the Marketing Communication modules were really useful and helped me to define the best option for the brand."

Jakkrit Kingchum - Investment Management MSc (2019)

Testimonial from Jakkrit Kingchum - Investment Management MSc (2019), student at Cranfield School of Management

“At the moment I am working as an Investment Analyst, Cranfield has given me the solid knowledge and background to work in this role. In the third term on the Investment Management MSc, we are required to do valuations so I had to use Bloomberg, Thomson Reuters and Datastream so it was really useful for me because I have to use it almost every day.”
