Who is it for?
The integrated MEng (Hons) Biomedical Engineering degree is designed to offer students the most direct route to achieving CEng professional registration. Biomedical Engineering applies the principles of science, engineering and medicine directly to the complex medical technologies used in the prognosis, diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of the sick and injured. Biomedical engineers also require managerial and communication skills and an awareness of the economic, environmental and social implications of their activity. How to apply
Applications for degree courses must be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). You can apply through your school or college using the Apply system, which enables you to submit your application directly to the UCAS website.
You can apply to up to five universities or institutions on the form. The UCAS code for City, University of London is C60.
Please take care to enter the correct course code when applying, particularly for subjects with a Foundation year or with BEng (Hons) and MEng (Hons) or BSc (Hons) and MSci (Hons) options.
UCAS has implemented an 'invisibility of choices' policy so that, on the initial application and while you are receiving decisions, each institution can see only their entry and not those of other institutions you have chosen. This ensures that your application for a course at City is considered solely on your academic and personal qualities.
You should submit your completed application form to UCAS with a £23 application fee. If you want to apply to City, University of London only, you can make a single choice application at a reduced rate of £12.
When to apply
Your application for entry in September 2018 should arrive at UCAS between September 2017 and 15th January 2018. Applications that arrive after 15th January 2018 will be considered only at City's discretion.
When your application is acknowledged by UCAS, you will be sent a personal identification number so that you can access your records via Track on the UCAS website.

Teaching and learning
This course is highly interdisciplinary. Students learn from academics of the School of Mathematics, Computer Science & Engineering and the School of Health Sciences, hospital consultants and experts from the medical industry.
Information is delivered in lectures, seminars, tutorials and laboratory classes. Learning involves a combination of theoretical, experimental and computational study. Our approach is to encourage critical thinking and foster curiosity through both teamwork and independent study. Group learning and communication skills are emphasised through design studies and student presentations.
Assessment is by coursework and examinations. Practical and technical skills are assessed through laboratory work, data analysis and project reports.
Grades obtained in each year count towards the final degree classification, with increasing weight given to the later years.

On the Biomedical Engineering course, you will cover a range of engineering applications that are relevant to the needs of the healthcare industry. Subjects covered include measurement, data analysis, mechatronics, biosignal and image processing, medical physics, biomedical instrumentation and biomedical optics.
The MEng (Hons) course covers further modules on biomechanics, biomaterials, biomedical sensors, bioinformatics and telemedicine.
In Part 4 MEng students will be involved in design project, which is a key part of the integrated Master's degree action as a transition from formal education to professional life. Project work embraces not only the technical aspects of design using advanced engineering tools but develops professional skills such as management, team building and business. The focus of all the projects is the delivery of a substantial machine or device in an international context, incorporating the latest thinking in technology as supported by our engineering research activities. Motivation levels in such projects are extremely high and the experience offers graduates opportunities to excel in job interviews with project achievements as exemplars of what they have delivered.
Year one is common to all of the engineering courses. Students study the science and mathematics that underpin engineering principles. Group exercises provide students with the opportunities to undertake preliminary engineering designs.
Students begin to specialise in Biomedical Engineering in year two while also studying measurement, data analysis and mechatronics.
The third year includes biosignal and image processing, medical physics and biomedical instrumentation, together with biomedical optics.
The final year of the integrated Masters involves a major individual research project and group design exercises and modules covering variety of topics including advanced structural analysis and heat transfer, advanced computational fluid dynamics etc. Students can select one of the following options: European Global Product Design (EGPR), Formula Student, Aircraft Design Project or Gas Turbine project. Please note that project availability may vary year to year dependent on student cohort size, demand and resource constraints.

More about fees
*The tuition fee for UK and EU students is determined by the UK Government and was £9,250 for the first year of study at City in 2017/18. The tuition fee for students commencing their studies in 2018/19 has not yet been confirmed: we will update these pages as soon as we receive confirmation. Fees in each subsequent year of study may be subject to an annual increase limited to the Student Fees Inflation Index as determined by the UK Government's Office for Budget Responsibility. However, this is subject to confirmation. The index is derived from the All Items Retail Prices Index. If fees do increase in each subsequent year of study, we will confirm any change to the annual tuition fee to you in writing prior to you commencing each subsequent year of study. Fees in each subsequent year of study will be subject to an annual increase limited by the All Items Retail Prices Index.
** The tuition fee for Non-UK/non-EU students was £16,830 for the first year of study in 2018/19. Each subsequent year of study may be subject to annual increase, as detailed above for UK and EU students, but this is also subject to confirmation.
Future Finance Loans

Placements are paid, and are a fantastic way to gain professional experience in a relevant field as part of your degree. Undertaking a placement year could also count towards the experience requirement for a professional engineering qualification.
Placements are highly encouraged at City; students that complete a placement year benefit from gaining professional experience working on real-life projects and are also more likely to; achieve higher grades, secure a graduate-level job and earn a higher salary.City is perfectly situated in the vibrant area of Clerkenwell. We have a range of recently refurbished facilities, including brand new undergraduate, postgraduate and research laboratories.
The Finkelstein Undergraduate Electronics Teaching Laboratory is the centrepiece of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Its facilities include state of the art electronic test and measurement devices, used for the teaching of new students, as well as advanced students working on their own individual or group projects.
Students are able to fabricate their own printed circuit boards using robotic technology. There is also a power engineering related working area, enabling students to access high voltage motors and transformers, as well as photovoltaic systems.
