About Environmental Technology EngD at Brunel University London

The Engineering Doctorate in Environmental Technology provides training in the techniques and skills needed to address environmental issues and problems, along with focused research and development aimed at applying them to your industry. The Pprogramme covers the application of Environmental Technology to the whole supply chain of goods and services. In addition to company-based research we also address policy issues for complete industry sectors.Entry Requirements* Minimum of upper second or master's degree in a relevant subject * Normally an engineering or natural science degree although there are often opportunities for other disciplines * Enthusiasm for working on interdisciplinary problem The Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Environmental Technology was established in 1993 with the University of Surrey and sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). It is awarded for industry based-research supported by a programme of professional development courses. EPSRC sponsored EngD programmes were set up in response to a belief held in industry, and supported by Government that the traditional PhD research degree did not adequately prepare researchers for careers in industry. EPSRC sees the EngD as the premier engineering qualification. Well over 100 Research Engineers (REs) (as the candidates are known) have enrolled on the EngD since 1993. Course AimsIt sometimes seems that there is no escape from 'doom and gloom' messages in the media about the environment - with business portrayed as the enemy. Climate change, rainforest destruction, ozone holes, contaminated land, polluted rivers all are pervasive themes for the media. How can business operate within civil society, as it faces the twin challenges of making profits and at the same time protecting the natural environment? Too often, people at all levels in industry have been facing these challenges without the necessary skills, tools and techniques, and, above all, the time, to address them. The Engineering Doctorate in Environmental Technology provides training in the techniques and skills needed to address these problems, along with focused research and development aimed at applying them to your industry. The Programme covers the application of Environmental Technology to the whole supply chain of goods and services. From considerations of more sustainable methods of resource extraction; to improved product design and manufacture; redesign to reduce the pollution caused by products in use and strategies for dealing with products at the end of their lives, including recycling and waste disposal. In addition to company-based research we also address policy issues for complete industry sectors, and at national and EU government level. Our graduates are capable not only of identifying and analysing complex environmental problems but also of providing and managing the implementation of the solutions for enterprises which are seeking cleaner and ultimately more sustainable businesses. The Brunel/Surrey Engineering Doctorate creates graduate Research Engineers with the necessary background knowledge, skills and experiences to understand the relationship between the environment, technology and business and to apply this understanding to the development, promotion and execution of corporate strategy.
