This degree has been developed for students who are interested in studying the related areas of contemporary Drama and Music at a high level. You will undertake theoretical and practical modules throughout and will have many opportunities to explore and develop your own ideas and interests.Entry RequirementsUCAS Tariff - 300 points, from:GCE A and AS-level Tariff points typically from 3 A-levels together with either 1 AS-level or Extended Project Qualification (typical offer BCC, including Grade B in Theatre Studies, Drama or Performing Arts and C in Music, plus a C in either an AS or EPQ). General Studies/Critical Thinking accepted.Irish Tariff points from 5 subjects.Scottish Tariff points from 3 Advanced Highers plus 1 Higher.Advanced Diploma Tariff points in Creative and Media, including Grade B in A-level Drama for Additional and Specialist Learning.BTEC ND DDM in a related subject.IB Diploma 31 points. For all of the above, 5 GCSEs or equivalent at Grade C or above are also required, to include English. Application statements should contain clear evidence of commitment to the particular emphases of our Drama programme. Access and mature students are considered on an individual basis.Course AimsThis degree has been developed for students who are interested in studying the related areas of contemporary Drama and Music at a high level. You will undertake theoretical modules and a limited range of practical modules throughout and will have many opportunities to explore and develop your own ideas and interests whilst developing an informed understanding of current debates in the subject. Widely different tastes and innovative approaches are positively encouraged. Course ContentDrama The Drama degree specialises in contemporary performance and you will undertake a rigorous investigation of a range of approaches and perspectives. As a Joint Honours student you will concentrate on Drama as a theory-based study rather than an exploration and study of practice. However, there are a limited number of practical modules available to you, including Performance Elements 1, Community Project, Digital Performance, and Placement.MusicMusic study at Brunel is dynamic and diverse with a special focus on contemporary music, encompassing Western Classical, Jazz, and Popular music. You will have the opportunity to explore the rich diversity of musical cultures (improvising and interpreting, past and present, traditional and avant-garde) through performing, composing and the study of musical techniques, analysis and criticism There is particular emphasis on contemporary music. After completing a core course in Level 1 in practical, creative and theoretical skills, you will have the opportunity to develop your particular interests (and strengths).Extra Lecturers also offer in-depth study courses in, for example, advanced composition, orchestration and arranging, and improvisation.Practical music activitiesThere is also a wide range of practical musical activities, which can be credited as part of your course, such as the orchestra, choirs, chamber and ensembles, jazz big bands and rock bands.Teaching and LearningStaff expertiseMany members of staff work professionally in performance, nationally and internationally as well as teaching.Our teaching team consists of a core of full-time and part-time tutors with professional experience and is supplemented by part-time specialist tutors. Excellent links with leading organisationsOur proximity to London means that we are able to draw on a large team of visiting lecturers who are leaders in their particular field of performance, composition or music business. There is the opportunity to attend a variety of national and international theatre performances and also to take part in various live art platforms where your work can be showcased. Specialist professional theatre practitioners and theorists of international reputation have presented seminars and workshops at Brunel, such as Troika Ranch, Franko B, and Philip Auslander. We are also able to arrange special events, visits and workshops, such as joint projects with the London Sinfonietta, which have resulted in students and professionals premiering their work at such major international music venues as the Queen Elizabeth Hall (on the South Bank) and the Barbican Centre. The University's concert season includes both regular student and visiting professional performers of international reputation.AssessmentLevel 1 does not count towards your final degree mark but you have to pass this level to continue with the degree. Level 2 is worth a third - level 3 the rest. The final year dissertation is worth a third of level 3 marks. Careers Past graduates in Music and Drama have entered a wide range of professions. These include: theatre and media careers, Arts administration, publishing and management. A high proportion of Music graduates either progress to postgraduate study at a university or conservatoire or have entered the music profession as composers or technicians. Some graduates now work as teachers or therapists following further training. Employable knowledgeAt Brunel we also help you to develop a wide range of vocational, collaborative and transferable skills that are highly attractive to employers in industry and commerce. Students have the opportunity, for example, to develop IT and presentation and communications skills during the course.
