About Education (New Route PhD) at Brunel University London

The School of Sport and Education at Brunel is a vibrant and dynamic community that responds to external forces and internal developments with expertise and enthusiasm. This expertise is dedicated to the education of teachers, youth and community workers and other related professionals, both those entering the profession for the first time and those who are established and wish to develop and enhance their existing qualifications and skills.A New Age of Learning The School's research embraces the vision of an inclusive education in which learning and teaching are enhanced through the education of professionals. The School's teaching, in programmes uniquely incorporating the results of this research, seeks to promote skills such as those developed in the area of supportive education and to prepare teachers to help all pupils of all abilities to develop their full potential. The MA in Education was recently praised by external assessors for its 'high quality teaching', 'pro-active tutoring system', and for the ways in which staff 'use their cutting-edge research in their teaching, making research integral to students' experience'. Research students are normally admitted to a research unit or centre in the School, where they benefit from working with staff and other research students in a similar field, and are encouraged to contribute to and participate in national and international research symposia. The School also runs regular doctoral research methods training courses.Associate Studentships There are opportunities for colleagues and prospective students from the UK, EU or overseas to acquire Associate status in Education without necessarily registering for an award. Associate students are allowed use of University facilities and access to the taught programme and tutorial support by negotiation. Facilities The School of Sport and Education has excellent support services and resources, including dedicated research areas fully equipped with on-line ICT facilities, and is able to support qualitative and quantitative approaches to approved research topics. In addition, research and teaching are enriched by the partnerships established between itself and schools, both locally and nationally. The programme aims to educate graduates not only to the high academic standards expected from PhD research but also in generic personal, business and communication skills. Because it extends the usual PhD from three to four years, it develops an integrated range of skills and knowledge that both broaden and deepen the individual's subject expertise beyond the bounds of the usual research degree. Usual entry requirements Normally a good first degree (usually a minimum of 2.1) or a Master's degree of a UK university (or recognised equivalent UK or overseas qualification) in a relevant subject. Other qualifications will be considered on an individual basis.
