About Design MPhil at Brunel University London

Brunel`s Design has an international research reputation, being rated 5 in last Government RAE. Teaching in Design and Engineering was officially rated `excellent` in the Government`s most recent QAA Subject Review Courses are taught by professionally active staff who ensure that they stay in touch with the commercial worlds of both design and engineering. Our graduates enjoy superb employment prospects and in a wide specturm of environements- manufacturing, service and engineering industries, design management and consultancy companies - many setting up their own compaines. The subjects available for a research degree are generally determined by the current research activities of the schools and research institutes of the University. You therefore need to read the relevant sections of this prospectus to check whether Brunel is working in a field in which you are interested. However, enquiries from applicants in associated areas are also welcomed. If your area of interest offers a Master of Research (MRes) route, you may be required to complete that programme before registering for a doctorate. The MRes has a taught component but also includes a period of research activity. Duration of programme Mode and DurationYou may work through full-time or part-time study or, where appropriate to the subject of your research, away from the University. A full-time doctoral programme usually takes up to three years and the length for a part-time version is normally four years. For an MPhil, the duration is usually one to two years. If you are taking one of the University`s extended PhD programmes (the NewRoute PhD and the specialist EngD and EdD fall into this category) you can expect to study for around four years full-time. This option is currently offered in a number of research areas and includes taught components designed to broaden and deepen your research expertise and understanding.
