How to find university course admission requirements

Lots of students want to a greater understanding of course admission requirements and how to find them. Be it queries about English language requirements (TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language, IELTS – International English Language Testing System ) or finding specific course requirements, these are the steps to make sure you are able to the admission requirements for your chosen course.

1. Choose your university

Although admission requirements may seem to be static, they are liable to change depending on the University you pick, the subject you wish to study, the level of study and the country your chosen University is located in. With this in mind, it is a good idea to build up a list of Universities that you wish to apply for, even if they are all in different countries. This will give you something to work through and keep track of your findings.

2. Choose your course

Now that you know which university or universities you are interested in, pick which course or courses you wish to apply for. Again making a list will help you keep track of what requirements are expected for each course.

3. Be a detective

At this stage you know where you want to study and you know what you want to study. The next step is using University websites to cross-check each course for its admission requirements. Some websites are easier than others to use, but the answer will be there for you to find.

What if I need more information?

So you have found your ideal course but maybe you are still not sure if you meet the requirements? Some university websites may leave you unsure and in this instance it is best to contact the university directly. Here is what to look for to find the relevant contact information:

  • Look for any sections of the website devoted to International study
  • Sometimes there will be specific contacts depending on whether you want to study an undergraduate or a postgraduate course
  • The contact information you need may be specific to the course or the department the course belongs to. If you can find an international e-mail then this is a good starting point
  • Some websites have extensive Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s), your question might just have already been answered

Don’t stop searching until you are sure you have found your answer, all the information you need is available with a little patience. Once you are ready it is time to begin with those applications!

Lets look at how to find the entry requirements for a course in Journalism in Australia.

Next, click on the course, in this case ‘Entertainment Journalism’ that you are interested in. On the course page, scroll down for the ‘Entry requirements’ section. Here you will find all the university entry requirements listed for this particular course:

As a final step, you may wish to confirm these details. Scroll up and click ‘Visit course webpage’. This will take you to the external website of the university course page, where you will be able to navigate to student admission requirements for international applicants.
