The Master of Management or Master in Management (MIM) is a fairly new type of postgraduate degree program that is rising in popularity. The majority (68%) of MIM programs are offered in Europe, although there are offerings in North America and Asia-Pacific as well. Viewed as an alternative to a Master of Business Administration (MBA) for recent graduates, the MIM is popular among young applicants because it requires little to no prior business experience. The modules in the program are often designed to give students a foundation in organizational leadership and business management. This attracts individuals from very diverse academic and professional backgrounds.
Entrance into a Master in Management degree program varies from institution to institution. Typically, the main requirements include a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, while several MIM programs require a bachelor’s degree in a field related to business. As the MIM is primarily intended for recent graduates, some schools also put a limit between the time of your graduation and application to a MIM course. Work experience is also considered by some schools during admissions, but most MIM programs require little to no experience. In the Global Master in Management (MIM) Survey conducted in 2014, 25% of students had no professional experience, while 75% had no more than one year of professional experience.
Other factors that are typically taken into consideration include an applicant’s grades and GMAT or GRE score. As with most application procedures, various leadership experiences and letters of recommendation may also be taken into consideration. Some institutions also require a letter of intent or an application letter in addition to an admissions interview.

Course content will vary depending on the institution, but generally, MiM programs cover a wide range of business topics. Students will be able to grasp management concepts through courses on managerial economics, financial management, leadership and organization and strategic management. Most programs also offer electives to allow students to specialize or focus on certain topics.
A number of MiM programs also incorporate a practical aspect in the courses. For example, London Business School has Business Immersion Week and Global Immersion Field Trips, while The London School of Economics and Political Science’s MiM program has a summer internship component.
Coursework may include written exams, research projects, case study analysis, presentations, group work and participation. Most institutions also require a major business project or thesis to complete the degree.
Programs offering electives to students allow them to gain a specialization on different areas of management or at least focus on the topics of which are of interest to them.

The accreditation of a degree usually depends on the country where the degree is awarded. In most cases, countries have their own accrediting systems for universities, students and graduates. Popular accreditations for business schools are EFMD Quality Improvement System (EQUIS), Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and Association of MBAs (AMBA).
Graduates of a Master in Management degree program can end up in different professional positions. As such, there is no universal licensing or certification that Master in Management graduates must obtain to be able to find a position in the field.
A Master in Management is a postgraduate degree that can typically take 1-2 years of full-time study. The exact period of time would depend on the university of your choice and the country wherein it is located.
According to the Global Master in Management (MIM) Survey conducted in 2014, “87% of full-time MIM graduates find a job within three months of graduating.” Popular industries that graduates work in upon graduating include consulting, financial services and consumer and luxury goods. Some also go into manufacturing, entrepreneurship and advertising.
