Study in England

As part of the points-based system you will require 40 points to be granted a Tier 4 (general) visa.

- 10 of the required 40 points are allocated on your ability to prove you have sufficient maintenance funds to cover your time studying in the UK, this will vary depending on where in the country you are looking to study – London is the most expensive location in England.

- The remaining 30 points required to achieve the 40 overall points are given on you being given a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) number from your chosen institution. This electronic reference proves you have met all of the requirements of your institution to study your chosen course. We advise all international students to check with the UKBA to ensure their chosen institution is licensed as a sponsor to accept international students.

When the time arrives to submit your visa application you will need the following:

A valid passport or other official travel documents
The visa fee
Your CAS reference number
Proof of your funds for studying and maintenance
The completed Visa application form
Evidence of your previous qualifications
Evidence of your English Language ability

However, you may be able to study in England without a visa if you are any of the below:

- A National of an EEA Country (European Economic Area, including Switzerland).
- A citizen of the Commonwealth with permission to enter the UK as one of your Grandparents were born in the country.
- A citizen of a British overseas territory.
