Ireland, a large island in north-west Europe, has been offering University education since the 16th Century. The country renowned for it’s kind and welcoming population alongside it’s emerald green landscape has a world-class education provision, often overlooked when considering studying abroad.
With 9 Higher education institutions the country will undoubtedly have a course to interest you at either postgraduate or undergraduate level.
Scholarships and fellowships are available from the Irish government but the availability of these varies depending on what country you are coming from and what course you are planning to study. Some institutions also offer scholarships directly but these are limited and highly competitive.

The tuition fees for non-EU international students vary widely from institution to institution and also course to course but as a guide you can see the average range for postgraduate and undergraduate fees for the 2010/11 period in the table below.

Living Costs
It has been estimated at current prices (2011) an international student will require between 7,000 to 12,000 Euros (€) per year for food, travel, textbooks, insurance, socialising and accommodation. The amount varies depending on whereabouts in Ireland you will be studying, what kind of accommodation you choose and how socially active you are during your studies.
The biggest portion of this sum is accommodation. Each institution has an accommodation officer/advisor who can provide more information about on-campus and nearby accommodation during your studies.

Visas
If you are going to study in Ireland from a country within the EU you do not need a visa, if you are coming from outside of the EU then you will be required to hold a valid visa. This should be applied for up to 8 weeks in advance of departure.

The main conditions for a student visa in Ireland are:
- - You have a letter of acceptance from your chosen Institution
- - You must have proof that the tuition fees have been paid to the institution (in full if below €6,000)
- - You have access to over €3,000 in addition to your tuition fees
- - You have private medical insurance, this can be arranged through a group scheme with your institution or individually

English Language
To study at degree level you will need to prove your English language ability in order to be accepted onto your chosen course. As with most English speaking destinations you will require an IELTS composite score of 6.5 (no lower than 6.0 in any component) or TOEFL score of 550 (220 for the computer based test). If you do not meet these requirements you can study short English language courses either in Ireland or in your home country.

Degrees from Irish Universities are recognised internationally so you can be assured your future employer will respect the addition in your experience. Ireland has been chosen by some of the world’s largest technology companies as their European base, these companies include Google, Facebook, Apple and Intel. In many cases across the world, large companies work alongside nearby Universities to develop their courses and provide qualifications that better match the needs of the employer – all of which increases the value of your degree.
Whilst studying in Ireland on a course of NFQ Level 7 (Bachelor’s Degree) or above you are permitted to participate in part-time work for up to 20 hours a week during term-time and 40 hours per week during holiday time. Specific restrictions exist on working while studying so please check these with the embassy or your chosen institution before travelling. You are not allowed to stay in the country to pursue employment opportunities but you can sometimes extend your stay to study a further degree.
Ireland has strong links with both the UK (it’s nearest neighbour) and the USA (home of many immigrant Irish families). Beyond social, political and industrial links it also shares links across its education institutions, which increases the opportunities to continue your education in these countries.
