About Midwifery, MSc - at Trinity College Dublin

The School of Nursing and Midwifery offers the following taught Masters in Science in Midwifery. The aim of this course is to strengthen and develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes of the nurses attending, thus enabling them to fulfil their highest potential in both their personal and professional lives. The course is firmly grounded in a body of knowledge that will promote excellence in the participant's area of practice. The course is designed to achieve an academically robust education for the participants and the various modules offered develop and complement subjects undertaken at Degree and Post-graduate Diploma level as required by the spiral curriculum of the School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies. Students who wish to register with An Bord Altranais as Midwife Tutors may undertake the Clinical Health Sciences Education strand of the programme (pending approval by An Bord Altranais).

Course Philosophy

The Philosophy of the MSc in Midwifery reflects the core philosophy of the School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies and acknowledges the entry criteria for the programme.

Students on this programme are recognised as practicing, professional nurses with a resource of clinical and educational skills and knowledge that will enhance their learning at this advanced stage of their personal and professional pathway. Peer and self directed learning are encouraged and facilitated and students are enabled to reflect, inquire, critique, problem solve, evaluate and debate professional and practice issues in an academically robust manner. Students are empowered to generate evidence that will improve practice and are guided and supported through that process.

Course Aim

This aim of this course is to provide a solid academic base to the understanding and development of nursing care. Graduates of this programme, in applying their learning, can be expected to provide quality nursing care and promote and develop excellence in their practice setting.

Learning Outcomes

The various modules offered lead on from, and complement, the subjects taken at Degree and Post-graduate Diploma level, thus continuing the model of the spiral curriculum.

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Strengthen and develop their expertise in their area of practice through the use of enhanced knowledge reflective skills and research-based practice.

  • Devise, implement and evaluate methods for improving the quality of midwifery care and /or midwifery education provided in Ireland.

  • Exercise administrative and intellectual leadership in their profession and the disciplines contained within.

  • Extend their skills in the critical evaluation of research reports and plan, conduct and evaluate research studies.
