Course Overview
The programme combines an exploration of general and broadly based Heritage issues, with more specialist or particular aspects of the field. The programme will equip students with an understanding and appreciation of the wider field of Heritage, which includes a work placement at level 5 and time in the Roderic Bowen Library and Archives at level 6. This provides students with both an attractive approach to study as well as equipping them with an appropriate set of skills and understandings applicable to a broad range of employments in the cultural industries.
This general understanding of Heritage and the Heritage sector will then be combined with two modules in the area of specialisation, namely Archives and Museums. This pathway builds upon expertise in the areas of museology and archival management, and seen in a variety of modules covering archiving, display, ongoing exhibitions of Egyptian artefacts, the interpretation of various Heritage materials, and the conservation of rare books and pamphlets. It takes advantage of the University's own extensive special collection of various materials from the 14th century onwards. It also takes advantage of the Lampeter museum, a joint venture between the local history society and the University.
The cluster therefore offers a unique combination of the general and the particular; an awareness of wider heritage issues and concerns, alongside a more concentrated focus upon different aspects of it. This mix will equip students with an attractive and appropriate set of skills and understandings applicable to a broad range of employment in the heritage sector.

Assessment
Assessment methods for the course draw upon a range of different forms and approaches that include a variety of written formats, from essays (ranging from 1,500 words up to 3,500 words in length), book reviews, literature surveys, short 1,000-word analyses, reflective journals, document analysis, palaeographic work, oral presentations, delivered both in a group and individually, and both seen and unseen examinations. In addition to summative assessments the programme also undertakes a range of formative assessments that may include one or more of the following: peer-assessed work, group presentations, journals, internet searches, document analysis, and bibliographic exercises.
Learning and Teaching methods
Teaching methods are designed to provide interest, variety and academic curiosity. Seminars, workshops and small group work are our principal means of teaching, though supported by lectures, field trips, revision and study groups. We also offer one-to-one tutorials in which you can discuss aspects of your own written work such as asking for help with the structuring of essays, or writing technique or requesting feedback advice on a specific assignment.

Joint Routes available
Joint honours students will study three Heritage modules at each level of study, choosing from the compulsory modules for that level. In addition they will choose three further modules from their other Humanities subject, again choosing from those on offer at that level of study.
