This course will prepare you to teach French across the 11-16 or 11-18 age range. It is a 10 month course which allows graduates to train to teach, gain a postgraduate qualification and qualified teaching status (QTS).
The course combines master's level academic study of key language learning theories and methods with a range of practical experiences. Approximately two-thirds of the course is spent in our partnership schools and colleges developing practical teaching skills with the support of trained mentors and experienced modern language teachers.

Our sessions are all interactive and good pedagogy is modelled by skilled and highly motivated tutors and guest speakers. We have strong partnerships with schools and colleges, many of which are involved in research projects with the University. We work with a large variety of schools, comprehensives, grammar schools, special schools and sixth form colleges, allowing us to personalise your placement experiences to your individual needs. University tutors and school-based mentors will support and challenge you to help you achieve your potential.

All fees for entry will be subject to yearly review and incremental rises per annum are also likely over the duration of courses lasting more than a year for UK/EU students (fees are typically fixed for International students, for the course duration at the year of entry). Self-funded international applicants for this course will be required to pay a deposit of £1000 towards their tuition fees before a confirmation of acceptance for studies (CAS) is issued. This deposit will only be refunded if immigration permission is refused. We will notify you about how and when to make this payment.
All applicants require a strong academic record at A level or equivalent and at degree level including a 2:2 honours degree or above. If you are not a native speaker of the language you are proposing to teach (French, German or Spanish), approximately 50% or more of the degree content should have focused on the first language that you are offering to teach. All applicants must also hold qualifications in English language and mathematics at GCSE grade C or above (Grade 4 or above as of academic year 2016/17), or hold equivalent qualifications in these subjects.
You should also normally have a second language (French, German or Spanish). Your knowledge of this second language does not need to be advanced - beginners' level will suffice. You do not need to have studied this language at degree level. Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses are available throughout the UK.
