About Education Studies with Psychology and Counselling, BA (Hons) - at Sheffield Hallam University

This course develops your specialist knowledge of psychologyhttp://www.shu.ac.uk/psychology/ and counsellinghttp://www.shu.ac.uk/counselling/ and allows you to apply it in educational settings. You achieve this through work-based learning and studying educational themes and policy. We introduce the main theories of psychology and counselling, which explain how the disciplines developed. You also examine the latest issues and debates. As you progress, you can choose to focus on pre-school, early years, childhood, adolescent or adult provision. You also gain a thorough knowledge of education policy, strategy and practice in the UK develop the ability to observe and assess educational practices including your own role and practice learn to look critically at debates and trends and reflect on personal and everyday experiences These skills enable you to contribute to the work and development of educational organisations. You also improve your skills in * communications * project management * critical thinking * information and communication technology * reflective practice * teamworking. Central to your development are work placements. These are usually based in an educational setting, such as a nursery, school or college, and they allow you to link theory and practice. You further develop your understanding of professional practice through specialist modules and by learning different approaches to researching practice. In year one you take modules in developmental, social and cognitive psychology and the foundations of counselling. As you move into year two, you specialise in social, developmental and cognitive psychology. You also examine counselling skills in education. Two optional modules let you focus on your chosen area. During year three, you take a year long research project linked to your final work placement. This allows you to specialise in psychology, counselling or education. Other modules allow you to debate current issues in psychology, counselling and education.
