University of Southampton, School of Education Student

What attracted me to the MA (Ed) Institutional Management and Leadership program at the School of Education, University of Southampton?

Before coming to England and continuing my postgraduate study, I worked as a lecturer and a teacher trainer in the Curriculum and Instruction department in the School of Education at King Khalid University in Saudi Arabia.

It was a challenge to gain a place at one of the high rank universities in the UK. I was accepted by a few British universities, but I chose the IML programme in the School of Education at the University of Southampton.

I found that this course was well organised and flexible enough for me to build my knowledge and understanding in the field of curriculum and instruction, so as to help me successfully engage in the institutional and professional development of my workplace. There are plenty of core units as well as a wide range of optional units that meet individual needs and goals and the flexibility of the program gave me the freedom to select the assignments that met my interests.

Another thing that I really liked about the IML programme is that there are many students attending the course from different cultures, backgrounds and countries. It was a really friendly environment that helped me to exchange ideas with them and learn more about their academic experiences.

The University of Southampton in general and the School of Education in particular provide excellent academic support for their students as well as all the necessary resources that help students to carry out their research projects. It provides a variety of free short courses that build the students' personal and professional skills.

In 2005/06 I successfully passed the one year IML programme.

The great experiences and support that I had during my IML program encouraged me to continue onto a PhD in the same school at the same university. I have now finished the first year of my PhD which has been wonderful; I attended a research training programme and received great support from the School of Education in presenting my work at a European conference.

Finally, what I really liked and admired about the IML programme in particular and the School of Education in general is that the teachers and staff are very friendly, approachable and helpful. Their offices are open for you whenever you need anything.

As a result of my experiences in this university I would recommend the IML programme in the School of Education at the University of Southampton to any student who wants to continue his/her study and who plans to have a bright and great future career.
