University of Salford
Situated on a green campus, the University of Salford is located less than three kilometres from the centre of Manchester. The University currently has over 18,000 students, including over 2,500 students from more than 130 countries around the world. The University is widely regarded as one of the UK's leading enterprise universities and is particularly famous for its links with industry, commerce and the arts. Salford graduates are prominent in business, industry, the public sector and non-governmental organisations worldwide.
The University achieved the highest possible rating during the latest government quality assurance inspection. More than half of researchers work in an area rated 5 or above in the UK government's research assessment exercise, and research in the built environment and information systems, including computer science and data networking, has been awarded the maximum 5* rating. In addition we have maximum teaching quality scores for politics and biological sciences. Our media and popular music programmes are famous throughout the world. Salford is the only university in the UK with its own TV station which broadcasts on a terrestrial signal, Channel M. Our links with employers mean that 74% of our full-time undergraduate courses offer work placements and the University enjoys an excellent graduate employment record.
The University is investing £150 million in new buildings, and refurbishment and regeneration of two campus sites. Students have free access to the internet, email, and over 800 open access computers, and can log on 24-hours a day. The University is also home to Europe's most powerful graphics supercomputer and to a vast range of specialised equipment and laboratories. There are four library sites with over 650,000 volumes as well as databases and an e-library system. Leisure facilities include a swimming pool, jacuzzi and sauna, sports halls, fitness rooms, an indoor climbing room, squash courts and all-weather sports pitches. Free medical facilities and counselling are available on the campus to all students.
Once at the University, students have access to a range of resources such as the Student Assistance Office, Careers Service and an assigned personal tutor to help get the most out of their experience. Salford's international student advisors can provide assistance and support to international students on a range of issues. The International Society enables students to meet new people from different cultures and organises events and visits to other parts of the UK and Europe. The Students’ Union offers a variety of clubs and societies to cater for every interest. The world's major religions are all catered for in the Manchester and Salford areas. Meeting places and prayer facilities are available, and most special dietary needs can be met. There are also a number of student-led religious societies.
