York St John University

York St John University is located in York, one of northern England's most beautiful cathedral cities. The University is a public university that was founded in 1841, and we offer a wide variety of academic subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
As a relatively small university, we get to know our students well and work hard to help you realise your own potential. Treating you as an individual is at the heart of what we do here. Our students leave with a real feeling of not only succeeding academically, but also with a belief that they have grown as a person. Many of our graduates say that their time at York St John University was a life-changing experience.

Academic strengths
York St John University offers a range of modular three-year degree programmes. There is a wide choice of subject combinations together with a range of specialist degrees. We offer professional courses leading to specific careers including fine arts, design, business management, dance, film studies, film & television production, IT, media, music, psychology, theatre, and sport science. Other options include English literature, history, and theology. Degrees in business management and the arts can also be taken over four years, which includes a Foundation Year for those who do not have the required academic qualifications or English language level.

Master's programmes are offered in Fine Arts, Design Practice, English Language Teaching, Leadership & Management, Leading Innovation & Change, Counselling, Literature Studies & Creative Writing, Theology & Religious Studies, and Sport Psychology.
The International Centre offers a variety of English language programmes at different levels, including an International Foundation Year, General English programmes (offered year-round) and English Language Summer School programmes.

Facilities
The York St John University campus is a fantastic place to study. A major investment of £50 million has seen the development of exciting and cutting-edge buildings and facilities. The campus is now an impressive blend of the contemporary and historic. The original campus is built around a quadrangle and is complemented by newer buildings including the Fountains Learning Centre, the impressive glass-fronted building at the University's main entrance. Fountains Learning Centre houses the library, a modern lecture theatre, and IT facilities where students have access to computers and internet 24 hours a day/seven days a week.

The latest development is a new building, finished in November 2008, that is designed to complete the dynamic modernisation of the campus. Located in a prominent position, at a gateway to the city and close by the medieval walls and York Minster, it links the city centre with the University quarter.

Other developments have included the creation of a Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, which provides facilities for students, staff, and creative partners to work together. A renovated Victorian Gothic chapel houses a Showcase Studio with state-of-the-art lighting, sound performance and exhibition facilities, reception area, meeting rooms, and a new media workshop.
The Design and Technology block was renovated and updated last year, which brought the facilities into the 21st century.
York St John University has five different student accommodation residence halls, and you will be guaranteed accommodation for your first year. Students can choose which residence they would like to live in. A brand new student residence hall opened in autumn 2008 at a cost of £10 million. This new accommodation provides fantastic, purpose-built housing for over 230 students on a self-catering basis. The University campus also offers a cafeteria, coffee shops, drama, music, dance and TV studios, a gym, a health centre and the Students' Union building.

York St John University is constantly reviewing the needs of our students and staff and we know that by investing in our University, we are also investing in you and your future.

Testimonials

Ken Inomata, Japan, Business Management/ 2nd year student

York St John University Student

I chose to study at York St John University because I thought it would be beneficial to take a management course with a global language to be successful in my career. I believe that studying in the UK, the most powerful economy within the European Union, will become a valuable experience in the next five to ten years. The most enjoyable thing about studying here at York St John University is to be able to exchange opinions with students from different places across the world. This allows me to enrich my understanding of global business and makes management study much more interesting and practical.

I think the most valuable aspect of studying Business Management at York St John University is the size of the university, because we are able to have a close relationship with lecturers who support you in both your academic and student life. Especially of interest for an overseas student, a variety of facilities and support systems are available to help you with your language or essay writing.

The best thing about life here is that I am able to have cultural interchange with people from different countries and to have a wide circle of friendship with them. You can see the world from a wider point of view. I do fully appreciate that I can spend my student life in York, one of the most stunning and spectacular cities in England. It is a very safe, relaxed, and lovely place to study.

Indu Vibha Meddegama, Sri Lanka, MA in English Language Teaching

York St John University Student

'I am Indu Meddegama. I am an English honours graduate from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka and I teach English Language at the University of the Visual and Performing Arts in Colombo.'

It is common knowledge that there is a shortage of British trained English language teachers in Sri Lanka. Therefore, obtaining a Post-graduate degree in the U.K.-the 'ancestral home' of English, would ensure my career advancement, and equip me with the skills and knowledge needed to contribute to the enhancement of ELT in my university in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, after completion of MA, I will be eligible to work in the U.K. for one year, which I believe to be a great opportunity for me to gain more experience in the culture and society in the UK.

The MA in ELT at York St John University has enabled me to view my career from a novel and fresh perspective. My colleagues and I differ in terms of nationality, ethnicity, language, age, and gender, but all of us share a common objective... a career in teaching English. The opportunity to share, discuss, and debate over issues related to the teaching of English with both amateurs as well as professionals in the field, has immensely enriched my learning experience at York St John.

The University is located in the heart of York, a city steeped in beauty and history: One need not be an artist to marvel at the ancient and the modern that exist in perfect harmony, alluring and enticing all those who visit the city. The campus library better known as the 'Fountains Learning Centre' is equipped with modern technological facilities, which provides the perfect ambiance for academic pursuits. Moreover, the availability of 24 hour email and internet access makes York St John the ideal 'home away from home' for foreign students such as myself.

Every day, I see faces brimming with enthusiasm, and hear the sound of laughter and excited chatter along the corridors, from within the classrooms, cafeterias, and along footpaths, reflecting the warmth and hospitality with which York St John embraces all its members. And I silently congratulate my self for choosing York St John University!

Anyuli Naciff Romero, Mexico, Film Studies and Media

York St John University Student

I chose Film Studies and Media because it seemed interesting and some of the best courses York St John has. The most enjoyable thing I have experienced at York St John University is that I am like any other student, everyone is willing to help me and I am supported by tutors. I am not a number, but a name! And I know that if I have a problem I can go with them and they will do anything they can to help me.

The UK is a wonderful place to study! You become independent learners, and you decide what and how are you going to learn it. My course is what I thought it would be: interesting and lovely. I am enjoying every aspect of it and now I know that here is where I want to be.

After I finish my degree I intend to study a Masters in PR and start working for an agency, TV, a magazine or with someone who is in Politics. I still haven't decided whether I want to do that here in the UK or somewhere else in the world, but I am going to decide that as time goes on. In the meantime I am enjoying my stay here as much as one can think of!
