School of Social Sciences
The School of Social Sciences at City University London is a vibrant place of teaching, learning and research. We bring together over 1500 students and staff in a modern and contemporary building based in the heart of central London. We address the major political, economic and social issues of today whilst our academics influence public thought and policy with their work. Courses of studyThe School offers 10 undergraduate and over 30 postgraduate programmes of study via the departments of Economics, International Politics, Psychology and Sociology. Within the Economics department we offer some very specialised programmes including the MSc Economic Evaluation in Health Care and a postgraduate programme in Health Economics alongside this we have programmes in Financial Economics, Economic Regulation and Competition and Business and International Business Economics.
Our BPS accredited Psychology programmes cover the areas of Counselling Psychology, Health Psychology and Organisational Psychology with the opportunity to go on and become a chartered psychologist with our stage two training Health and Counselling programmes. Within Psychology we have also developed two highly specialised Graduate Diploma programmes in Specialist Educational Intervention and Clinical Supervision.
Within the department of Sociology we offer internationally focused postgraduate programmes in Communications, Criminology, , Human Rights, Media, Refugee studies Social Research Methods and the worlds first MA in Surveillance Studies. At an undergraduate level the department offers programmes in Sociology with the option of a joint honours degree in Criminology, Media Studies or Psychology.
The newly established department of International Politics covers a diverse range of themes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Increasing concerns in todays society such as poverty, terrorism, conflict, human rights, economic development and the global environment makes the study of International Politics for students a unique and exciting challenge.
EmployabilityAt City University we are proud of our excellent record for graduate employment, having been ranked 5th in the Sunday Times and 13th in The Times employability tables. City has a special focus on education for the professions, and over two-thirds of our programmes are recognised by the relevant professional body. In addition, the School of Social Sciences maintains close links with the businesses and organisations it serves.

Islington is one of the most vibrant areas of London, and an exciting place to live. The boroughs main artery is Upper Street, packed full of shops, bars and restaurants. Islington is also home to two international art venues - Sadler's Wells and Almedia Theatre - as well as two cinemas and a variety of pubs, theatres, comedy venues and music clubs.
Further south on the University's border with the City, the area around Smithfield, Clerkenwell and St John Street is also a lively cultural quarter offering galleries, shops, bars, cafes and restaurants.
Facilities and resourcesCity has invested more than £3.5million enhancing the IT infrastructure. All computers now share the same core tools and have access to more than 200 different teaching and business applications.
