Testimonials

Hoa Quyhn Tran - International Communications and Development MA

School of Social Sciences Student

Having worked as a journalist in Vietnam, I became particularly interested in the inter-relationship between communication, society and development.

I chose to take the MA in International Communications and Development at City University London not only because of its excellent record for graduate employability, but also because it is one of the few educational institutions in the UK that offers a course which emphasises the study of the relationship between media and development.

A challenging and stimulating course, it offers a range of options including media and communications within the context of globalisation, transnational media systems, political communication and the role of international and non-governmental organisations. Theoretical concepts are applied to real life cases giving a sound balance between theory and practical elements of the programme.

What's more, there is no better place to study media than in the heart of London, the world's media hub.

I have no doubt that undertaking a postgraduate degree will have a positive impact on my career. Not only has it enabled me to become a better journalist but also to develop important skills such as critical thinking, rationality, open-mindedness, discipline and judgement.

As an international student, the time I have spent in the UK has been an exciting and meaningful experience. Apart from the precious academic knowledge and skills I have gained, I have also had the opportunity to experience the rich British Culture, learn more about its unique history and enjoying breathtaking scenery.

Kristoff Bonnello - Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology

School of Social Sciences Student

I chose to study at City University because of its fine international reputation and its strong research focus. Its School of Social Sciences is equipped with the best academics, technology and resources in the field, all of which help to foster my professional development.

Training as a professional counselling psychologist is demanding but life at City allows me to strike a balance between academic and extra-curricular activities. I work as a student ambassador and represent other postgraduate students on the Social Sciences Board of Studies; it's great to be part of the wider university community.

My experience at City has been excellent for several reasons. The counselling psychology team are great: my personal tutor always shows a genuine interest in my work and development and my research supervisor has fostered my learning in a genuine and caring way. The counselling psychology programme is structured in a way that has allowed me to progress naturally rather than in a technical or artificial way. I'm now in a position to explore the many opportunities open to counselling psychologists, from jobs in private organisations to charities and research institutions.

The staff at City are inspiring, helpful and have significant expertise in their field, and the university's location at the heart of London also means that we're open to endless opportunities. If you come to City, you'll find so many learning opportunities available to you; you'll be able to take your personal and professional development seriously from beginning to end.

Sohaib Ahmed - MA International Politics

I chose City University London due to its excellent reputation as a top graduate employer. Its prime location in central London means that you are surrounded by many amenities and a vibrant social scene.

The best aspects to the course are the excellent teaching resources and highly knowledgeable lecturers from a wide range of backgrounds. From International Politics to Global Political Economy to Political Islam, scholarly debate within seminars and lectures are skilfully guided by highly trained staff who are experts in their respective fields.

The course consists of a classic lecture/seminar format. In the lecture the main topics are discussed whilst seminars then focus on the student's own opinion on key aspects of the debate. This is highly useful as it develops public speaking and builds confidence. In addition, class presentations and guidance from personal tutors help you to maintain progress and acts as an indicator of your progression through the course.

There is no doubt that gaining a postgraduate award is highly valued in the workplace, as it shows commitment to further learning. In the future I plan to apply for the Fast Stream Civil Service. However other options such as the United Nations Development Programme and the European Union are also feasible career paths.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at City. The staff are helpful and professional and the array of International students studying at City help to make it a truly global institution where diversity is welcomed and a forum for debate is encouraged. There is always a wide variety of subjects to choose from and the atmosphere and focus on the student - especially in postgraduate study - has enabled me to feel more confident in gaining employment after my degree.
