Universitat Pompeu Fabra(UPF) is one of the most modern and highly prestigious public universities in Spain. It was founded in the year 1990 and is located in the urban centre of the city of Barcelona, by the sea.

The University offers undergraduate and graduate courses. Graduate programmes include Masters (MSc, MA, LLM) and PhD in the social sciences (law, political sciences and administration, sociology, economics and business studies); in the humanities (language and literature, art, history and thought); in communication, design and information technologies as well as in health and life sciences (biomedicine, biology, biotechnology, public health and bioinformatics). The University has a wide programme of scholarships.

UPF is third out of 71 spanish universities according to the best known ranking published in Spain by the daily newspaper El Mundo (May 2007). UPF is a flagship university with a decisively international outlook and a steadfast commitment to forging links between students and society. This commitment accounts for the high degree of mobility of its students and the large number of foreign students (especially postgraduates) on its courses; its intense collaboration with universities all around the world; the fact that UPF has leading professors and teaching personnel on its staff as well as its participation on a multitude of international projects, networks and associations as well as the University's close ties with the fields of many sciences. All this has enabled Pompeu Fabra University to incorporate frontline companies from these sectors into its postgraduate programmes. These companies take an active part in drawing up the contents of programme subjects, actually teach certain classes and contribute their practical expertise in order to provide high quality education.

As regards research, aside from its consolidation in the social sciences and humanities, the UPF is leading two outstanding projects: the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), and the Barcelona Media Park (PBM), the latter being a large-scale infrastructure for education, research and production work in the spheres of communication and technology. Research articles published by UPF are the most frequently quoted on average (13.5 quotes per article) out of 71 Spanish universities. The UPF also heads the ranking of Spanish universities ratio of research publications per ful time profesor (1.33).

The UPF job placement level is very high. UPF hosts every year a "Career Fair" in its campus. According with recent data, 90% of UPF students find a job within the first six months of graduating, and over 73% find employment in jobs related to their studies.
