The University of Edinburgh Business School

A world class School

The University of Edinburgh Business School mission is to provide the highest quality business education to develop the leaders of tomorrow

The School

The study of business was first offered at the University in a pioneering business degree in 1918, with the Edinburgh MBA first offered in 1980, making it one of the longest established MBA programmes in the UK. The high level of experience that has been gained over the years is reflected in the fact that the School is accredited by both AMBA and EQUIS, as well as being ranked among the best in the world by both the Financial Times and the Economist.

Programmes

The School offers several MBA courses including a one-year MBA, 15 month MBA in International Business and 36-month part time MBA programme. In addition the School has seven one-year MSc programmes: MSc in Marketing - MSc in Marketing and Business Analysis - MSc in Carbon Management, MSc in Accounting and Finance, MSc in Finance and Investment, MSc in International Business and Emerging Markets and an MSc in Management. More information is available on our website www.business-school.ed.ac.uk

Facilities

Our home is a modern, purpose-built building with 24-hour access and wireless computer facilities throughout. We have our own cafe for refreshment and discussion. At the heart of the school is the Research Access Centre, which contains extensive learning resources and databases underpinned by the Schools knowledge website. We are a three-minute walk away from the University's Main Library, one of the most important research libraries in Europe.

The Business School is located centrally, in a dedicated building with fully networked computer facilities available 24-hours a day. Its resource centre provides online access to a wide range of business journals and company reports. It also supports all courses and acts as a comprehensive portal for accessing management and business resources. In 2010 we move to a nearby building which has been refurbished and custom-designed for the Business School. This building has state-of-the art lecturing facilities, generous social space and a range of facilities for staff and students. The building will be a true hub for business.

The Faculty

The School boasts a large and international faculty of over 80 teaching staff drawn from around 20 countries. Many are active in industry-based research and consultancy for both commercial organisations and government bodies. This broad-based research work feeds into the quality of the teaching, particularly in terms of bringing students up-to-date with current business issues.

International Partner Schools

The international outlook of the School is enhanced by our partnerships with a number of leading overseas School, including ENPC in Paris and its sister institution in Shanghai, EADA in Barcelona, Copenhagen Business School, Fisher College in Ohio, USA, the Schulich School of Business in Toronto, the Macquarie Graduate Mangement School, Sydney and Helsinki School of Economics.

Strong corporate links and alumni network

The School fosters strong corporate links. Over 50 visiting speakers (including chairmen and CEOs of publicly quoted companies) drawn from the local and international business community speak to the MBA class each year on a variety of topics. Some of these senior industry practitioners are the Schools own MBA alumni who provide an invaluable resource in terms of advice and contacts to students. Our alumni network now numbers over 3500 and stretches across 80 countries, including representation in virtually all major companies and industry sectors. We look after our alumni, and after graduation our students are able to take advantage of extensive alumni facilities and also the offer of lifelong learning through MBA+ and Executive education offers.

World class research

The Schools links with the business community are enhanced by its well-known research centres and institutes including the Centre for Financial Markets Research, the Credit Research Centre, the Centre for the Study of Retailing in Scotland and the Centre for Entrepreneurship Research. The School is highly rated in research, enjoying RAE scores of 4B,4A and 5 (out of a maximum of 5) in its three research areas.

The School places a very strong emphasis on developing the personal skills of students. This is carried out by a three stage development programme that runs throughout the academic year. The programme starts with a diagnosis of the student's current skills using a range of leading diagnostic tools and benchmarks. This is followed by the delivery of the underpinning knowledge and underlying concepts which help the student become aware of the key issues that affect their ability to lead and work in teams and solve real business problems. Finally, a planned programme of career and skills development is provided through individual feedback in order to enable the student to reach their chosen career goal.

Mindful of the importance of developing a network of contacts for career development purposes, the School hosts a number of joint events with professional and business support organisations in order to facilitate networking. Students are assisted in their career management by a number of companies which make recruitment presentations on-campus. Students also have access to two paid-for MBA online job posting platforms and have the facility to post their profiles, similar to mini resumes, on the School website.

The University resource

The Schools reputation is backed up by those of the wider university. Founded in 1583 by royal charter, the University of Edinburgh has, for over more than four centuries, achieved a reputation for excellence, academic rigour, and challenge. This, combined with a focus on knowledge application, will prepare you for any kind of future career that you may consider.

And finally - the City

Edinburgh is an ancient and yet vibrantly modern capital city. Its lively and safe; welcoming and full of local character. It provides the best living environment in the UK. It is the second financial centre of the UK and boasts many libraries, museums and galleries - many are admission free. In the summer Edinburgh is home to the largest cultural festival in the world. In July and August you will find book, film, art, theatre and jazz festivals and of course the world famous Fringe Festival with shows to suit any taste. The School is placed right in the heart of the city with easy access to all these amenities and a quick train or coach journey will take you to the magnificent Highlands of Scotland. London is easy to reach by train or air.

Accommodation

The University offers accommodation in three residences specifically designed for postgraduates: Mylne's Court, Richmond Place and Roxburgh Place. It also offers single-person studio apartments at South Bridge. Please note all accommodation is subject to availability.

1. Mylne's Court
Perhaps one of the most attractive University residences, Mylne’s Court is situated towards the top of the Royal Mile, close to Edinburgh Castle. Built in the 1690s, it has been restored to 21st century standards, without losing any of its period charm. Much of Mylne's Court has been redeveloped as flats for groups of up to five students.

2. Richmond Place
This modern residence is just a few minutes walk from the School. Built in a traditional residence style, most of the rooms are positioned on either side of long corridors, with kitchen and living areas at either end.

3. Roxburgh Place
This small, new residence accommodates 59 postgraduate students in five 12-person flats, sharing comprehensive kitchen and bathroom facilities. Located a few minutes walk from the School, next to Richmond Place, all rooms are larger than many in University accommodation.

4. South Bridge
Opposite Old College, this small development of single-person studio apartments is ideal for students looking for more privacy rather than sharing a flat. Each studio includes an open plan kitchen/living room/bedroom unit, with an en-suite shower room. The development is located just a few minutes walk from the School.

Private accommodation
Many MBA and MSc students prefer to live in private rather than University accommodation, particularly if they are accompanied by partners and families. If you are interested in renting privately, there are a wide range of flats and apartments in close proximity to the School. To help in your search for privately-available accommodation, the links below may be helpful. Equally, the School is sometimes notified of properties that are available for rent, for example, when current students leave Edinburgh, or if an alumnus has a property to rent.

Opportunities to study abroad

In an international business world, it is important we have an understanding not only of the global business dimension, but also of the cultures and languages of the individual markets we deal with. The only true way to gain these valuable insights is to spend time there.

There are three ways to achieve just this on our undergraduate programmes.

Under the ERASMUS/ SOCRATES scheme, selected students spend their third year at another European university. We already have arrangements with institutions in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Spain, and we are currently discussing potential links with others.

Business Studies students are also eligible to apply for a place on the University of Edinburgh and Business Studies International Exchange Programmes.

This enables students to spend their third year at a university in Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore or the USA. Further exchange programmes are under development.

The MA in International Business and an MA in International Business with a Language involves students studying abroad in their third year.

35 years

Career history
Prior to her MBA studies, Berenice Kude had undertaken an undergraduate degree in business and a MSc in Finance, both from the same university in Brazil. In terms of her main professional experience, she worked as a business consultant for a major Brazilian firm, which specialised in the small company sector.

Everybody knows that studying for an MBA is a very challenging and intense experience. Therefore, when I made the decision to leave my job, country and family behind, I knew that, if I were to achieve my goals, I would have to work very hard.

Making the right choice
The whole process started with the selection of the country in which to study. I picked the UK because of the reputation of excellence of its universities. The fact that I was awarded with the Chevening Scholarship from the UK`s Foreign and Commonwealth Office obviously made everything a lot easier (I am still very much thankful to the British Council and amazed with the overall support I got from them that year).

The next step was to select the MBA programmes that interested me and suited my needs. I went for a trip around the UK, visiting the universities of interest, talking to the people and looking at the different places. The University of Edinburgh Management School (UEMS) MBA stood out for various reasons: its programme suited my needs; it is very highly ranked among other British universities; the diversity of its student body interested me; and, last, but not least, of course, the city of Edinburgh itself and the friendliness of the Scottish people, which was definitely a big plus.

Once there
The year I spent in Edinburgh consisted basically of a lot of work, but it was also a lot of fun. I studied literally full time. I also spent a great deal of time doing a range of group activities - some were compulsory (a great chunk of the programme consists of groupwork, which is a great training by the way!) - and `voluntary` activities, since, right from the beginning, I was part of a study group, which proved to be a very efficient way of learning.

I also put a lot of effort from the very beginning into developing my career - researching companies, taking part in career fairs, etc. On the other hand, I also made many good friends from all over the world, and enjoyed very much living in the Scottish capital and learning a bit about the fascinating local culture.

Was it worth it?
Looking back, I can honestly say that doing my MBA in Edinburgh has been a real turning point in my career and personal life. I have managed to achieve all the goals I had before starting the programme: improving my overall business knowledge, changing industry, joining a large multinational corporation and experiencing life in Europe with all the interesting cultural experiences that brings. I believe the UEMS was greatly responsible for this. The programme, the support I received from the Careers Office and the experience exchanged with classmates - if asked, I would be able to list many reasons why I would highly recommend the UEMS programme to anyone looking to start an MBA.

`I can honestly say that doing the MBA in Edinburgh has been a turning point in my career and personal life. I have managed to reach all the goals I had before starting the programme.`
