University of Canberra

The University of Canberra campus is a haven of clean air, tall trees and native wildlife, including parrots, honey-eaters, cockatoos and a mob of resident kangaroos who live near the Student Residences, naturally enough.

We're situated in Bruce, a north-western suburb of Canberra, well-served by public transport and within easy reach of shopping and entertainment venues in Belconnen Town Centre or in "Civic", the Canberra commercial business district.

On campus, social life revolves around our coffee shops and food outlets, lounges and lawns, the activities of various clubs and societies, and events organised by UCU. For the athletically-inclined there's a well-equipped sports and fitness centre with squash, backetball and tennis courts. There's also a range of shops and banks conveniently located on campus.

We're not too far from Canberra's other attractions, the National Gallery of Australia, the National Library of Australia, the Museum of Australia, Parliament House and Lake Burley Griffin.

Our Students

Others have become prominent writers, journalists, performers and sports men and women. We're proud of every one of them.

Your fellow students, some 11,000 of them, come from every state in Australia and many other countries. About 1500 of them live on campus. Others share a house off-campus or board with homestay families.

Testimonials

Vickey Hsiao

University of Canberra Student

Life in Canberra is "very good" according to visiting Taiwanese student Vickey Hsiao.

Ms Hsiao is studying a Graduate Diploma in Marketing and Communications at the University of Canberra.

"I really like Canberra it is large enough to have everything I want but small enough to get to know very well, I also enjoy the lifestyle on campus at the University of Canberra.

She is in her first semester of study at the University of Canberra and is completing the Diploma as part of her Masters in Human Resources that she is studying in Taiwan.

"In my first semester I have really enjoyed the course. It is a really practical course and I find the lecturers very good. I have also spoken to my friends working in public relations in Taiwan and they say that the things I am learning are the right things I need to know," she said.

Vicky Hsiao is attending the University of Canberra on a Rotary International Ambassador Scholarship. The scholarship assists financially along with assigning a local Rotarian to assist her in settling in to the area.

"I am very lucky because Rotarian Harry Kraft has made me feel very welcome and invited me to be part of his own family."

Ms Hsiao will be completing her Graduate Diploma in November and returning to Taiwan to complete her Masters.

"I hope to one day work in the area of human resources or public relations. I would like to work in Australia, but I would also like to work in the Asia-Pacific or United States," said Ms Hsiao.

Aditya Kachru Student Profile

University of Canberra Student

"I've always idolised one person throughout my life and that's my father. The amount of courage and patience he has to understand the whole process of life helps me to do the same. He has the courage to fight to excel in whatever he does and an immense patience to wait for the success. My father says with every failure there is success just round the corner. These one and a half years have taught me a lot but the mantra of courage and patience have made me stronger from inside," said Indian student Aditya Kachru.

Aditya Kachru has been at the University of Canberra for a year and a half. While completing his Masters of Marketing Communication he worked as a tutor at the university.

"I have met lot of interesting people through this insightful journey and made friends from all walks of life, either from different countries, professionals or students. I love hanging out and chatting with them thereby learning more than the country they belong too."

"I think coming to Australia is not just an educational decision but a journey which is full of lifetime experiences. Living, struggling and then again getting up to fight back develops your character that helps in enhancing the real person inside you and I suggest everyone experience it." Aditya Kachru said.

"When I first came to Canberra I fell in love with the city. I come from Delhi which is crowded with people. There are less people here and it's more of a multicultural society and a beautiful place to study and live. When I got here, for a moment I thought I cold actually breathe in and clear my thoughts."

"Uni is full of inspiration as it unlocks your aspirations and desire," Said Aditya

"It is a multicultural university and I have met students from different countries which allowed different thoughts to emerge. This helped me not only with my education but also made me realize how important it is to be a good human being. Out here you find openness and acceptance wherever you go, and at the same time you are given an opportunity to excel."

Aditya Kachru hopes to work in brand management and possibly open his own advertising agency one day.

"I haven't planned my future. I feel this place is special for me. No matter where I go and what I do, I would always cherish the memories of the struggle, acceptance and the beauty of this place," said Aditya.

Lalanka Amarasri

University of Canberra Student

University of Canberra's strong academic reputation is the reason Sri-Lankan born Lalanka Amarasri wanted to further his studies in Accountancy at the University.

Lalanka is undertaking a Master of Professional Accounting and believes that the University of Canberra has one of the best postgraduate programs in Accountancy in Australia.

"The University of Canberra was easily my first choice. The academic atmosphere, fellow students and lecturers along with the opportunities for career advancement are all among the things I value most about the University of Canberra.

"As a postgraduate student I feel like I have been welcomed into the broader academic community and the guidance I received from lecturers at the School of Business and Government has been massive," he said.

Lalanka also enjoys the city of Canberra and describes it as small enough for you to get comfortable quickly with a very relaxed atmosphere.

He hopes to practice as a Certified Practising Accountant (CPA) in Australia when he completes his Masters in Professional Accounting.
