The University of New England in Armidale, Australia is in the enviable position of boasting an excellent international reputation as well as being a leader in research and academic innovation. The University is in the city of Armidale, in the heart of the picturesque New England Tableland region of the State of New South Wales. Armidale is a regional Australian community that is proud of its multicultural society, with students from over 75 nations studying at UNE. The engagement of international students with the wider community is an important aspect of life at UNE, and something we know international students appreciate and applaud.

UNE achieved the top rating (five stars) for all three primary categories of students' 'educational experience' in The Good Universities Guide for 2009. With one of the highest staff-to-student ratios among Australian universities, UNE provides opportunities for students to interact more easily with classmates and academic staff promoting discussion and effective learning.

The English Language Centre (ELC) at UNE provides a range of English language courses to students as well as a direct pathway to tertiary study at UNE through its English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program.

Orientation meetings

Orientation takes place in the week before classes start and has three purposes:
1. Introducing students to the teaching and learning environment so that they become familiar with the campus, services available to students, and the key people who can assist them in their studies.
2. Enrolment. Students are required to complete an online enrolment where they nominate the units they will undertake that year.
3. Having fun! Activities across the University and Colleges offer opportunities for students get together, overcome the nervousness that most people feel at being in a new environment, and make some new friends. There are often free giveaways and great deals from local businesses also during this time.

Postgraduate Research Scholarships
UNE offers a number of substantial scholarship opportunities to postgraduate students studying research-based degrees at UNE. There are different types of scholarships available; some are targeted to specific disciplines or research projects and others are more general with broader eligibility criteria.

Australian Government Scholarships
Australian Scholarships is an Australian Government initiative to build partnerships and increase mutual understanding, knowledge and innovation in the Asia Pacific region. Australian Government Scholarships includes all of the existing scholarship programs managed by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).

The city of Armidale offers lots of different accommodation options for students including fully catered lodging, boarding houses, share houses and private rentals.

On-Campus
Residential Collegate Environment
The University of New England offers seven residential colleges on campus.

UNE On-Campus Accommodation



All colleges on campus are fully catered, which means that breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided every day for you, as are regular cleaning and linen services. There are always college staff members available to help you out, and each college also assigns senior students to look after and support you during your time at college.

Off-campus
Rental Accommodation
There are always houses and units for rent in Armidale, though students need to be aware that during the 4-6 weeks before semester commencement there is a much higher demand for housing and they need take into account the extra time it may take to find suitable accommodation. When deciding to rent a house or unit, students need to take into consideration whether they will live on their own or with other people, and the cost of setting up a house, which will include a bond (equal to 4 weeks rent), furniture, electricity connection, phone connection and other setup costs.

Approximate rental costs in Armidale:
Room in a share house: AU$65 - 110 per week
1 bedroom unit: AU$110 - 160 per week
2 bedroom house: AU$140 - 200 per week
3+ bedroom house: AU$160 - 360 per week

International student services

English Language Support
English Language support is available to UNE international students in conjunction with UNE's Academic Skills Office. Ongoing support and assistance to students of non-English speaking background are available to assist students reach their educational goals. The program includes grammar and integrated language classes to improve English communication skills, and personal consultations for assistance with all areas of English proficiency.

Counselling
The University provides a counselling service for all students. If you feel lonely, or homesick, or you have problems you need to discuss with a professional counsellor, you can make an appointment between 8am and 4.30pm to see someone.

Child Care
Students who come to UNE with their families may need to access child care. There is a child care facility on campus called Yarm Gwanga. To learn more about the services available and costs involved. International students who need child care should make an appointment to talk with the International Services staff for more information.

Airport pickup

Airport pick-up services (by International Services staff) are offered to all students arriving into Armidale from Sydney.

To arrange airport pick-up, email ioserv@une.edu.au. Include in the email your name, flight number and arrival time. Students will receive an email confirming that they will be met at the airport and the details.

In the event that no one is at the airport to meet the student (after a pick-up has been arranged and confirmed) they should telephone International Services staff on 6773 3192 if they arrive between 9am and 5pm on working days, or 040 085 2226 after hours.

Students arriving in Armidale by train or bus should email the staff at International Services ioserv@une.edu.au to arrange pick-up. Alternatively, call 13 10 08 to book a taxi upon arrival.

Opportunities to study abroad

The UNE Study Abroad program enables students from around the world to study at UNE as part of their home degree where an exchange agreement is not in place. Students can choose from a range of different subject areas and tuition fees are applicable.
