Tuition fees range from RMB 10,000 to RMB 40,000 per year (US$1,460 to US$6,000). The cost of living is also very reasonable, at around US$3,000 to US$15,000 per year, depending on your accommodation and lifestyle choices.
Undergraduate degrees take four to six years to complete, Masters degrees two to three years and PhD studies three years. Chinese language studies usually take one to two years.
The China Scholarship Council offers overseas student scholarships to around 5% of all international students, providing a subsidy of around US$200 for living and tuition expenses for overseas students.

The cost of living for international students is between US$3,850 and US$7,700 per year, including accommodation, food and transport. If you live in a university hall or dorm, you’ll pay between US$650 and US$1,800 per semester for accommodation, but off-campus you could pay three or four times that amount!
Your student ID will get you discounts on public transport, as well as at some museums, restaurants and shops.

Minimum visa requirements – You’ll need to apply for a student visa before arriving, unless you have a permanent Hong Kong ID card (HKID). You’ll need:
- Forms 936 A, E, K, and L, completed and signed
- Sponsor's Certificate ID (E) 936B (English) or ID (C) 936B (Chinese)
- Photocopy of your sponsor Identity Card or passport
- Proof of your academic qualifications
- A photocopy of your letter of admission from a university in Hong Kong, as well as your letter accepting their admission
- One photo of yourself
- Evidence of your financial standing
- Evidence of residence in Hong Kong
Allow two months for processing. You can’t work with your student visa, unless you can convince the Immigration Department that it’s an essential part of your studies.
Language tests – You will need to prove your fluency in English to apply for your student visa. TOEFL and IELTS certificates are accepted.

The cost of living is less expensive outside Jakarta. Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta – one of the smallest provinces – says living expenses for a single student are US$172 per month, including a single room, food, transport, medical cover and other expenses.
