About Applied Marine Science, MRes - at University of Plymouth

General programme structureThe world`s oceans are a huge natural resource and play an important role in the stability of the global environment, but their exploitation creates environmental, social and economic problems. Disposal of sewage and effluent pollutes coastal waters, dramatically impacting on their suitability for recreation. Coastal erosion and the construction of sea defence systems cause further problems that may be exacerbated by climate change and global sea level rise. Careful management is essential if these conflicting activities are to be pursued successfully. The programme produces graduates with a scientific knowledge of the coastal environment and an understanding of the pressures placed upon it. It develops the skills required to assimilate knowledge over many disciplines and apply it to environmental analyses. Our graduates advise on, organise and control the development of marine resources and activities internationally, and help industry and governments protect and manage the world`s seas. The programme addresses three specific areas: exploration and expoitation of coastal seas nearshore pollution monitoring coastal engineering management Research topics range from an investigation of the impact of a new sea wall on sediment transport to a study of the effects of contaminants in marine waters.
