About Staging Shakespeare, MA - at University of Exeter

The programme gives attention to both the original staging and to modern methods. It also includes a placement at the New Globe Theatre in London where students have the opportunity to work on the stage of that theatre, as well as a placement with the Shakespeare Centre in Stratford upon Avon. The degree is designed for students with an interest in: the historical conditions which shaped the original staging of Shakespeare’s plays; twentieth-century staging of Shakespeare’s plays; and testing their own ideas of staging Shakespeare. As always in Drama we like to leave space to develop ideas with rather than for students. It should be noted that this programme has a distinctly practical emphasis.

Either a Directing or an Acting pathway, or both, may be followed, as these are intertwined. The one-year qualification of Master of Arts and the two-year Master of Fine Arts are based on the British system of postgraduate study, which allows you the flexibility to follow your own research interests. The programme contains a series of taught seminars and practical classes within which you have the opportunity to select much of your own material, and a substantial practical project of your own choosing.
