Universities in Romania

Located in south east Europe and sharing borders with countries including Moldova and Bulgaria, Romania is an EU nation that offers spectacular wildlife and nature, fascinating architecture and history, and a distinct culture to explore. International students will also be attracted to Romania thanks to its high quality of education alongside very reasonable living costs and tuition fees.

The types of University

Universities in Romania can be divided into the following groups:

  • Public universities – There are over 40 public universities in Romania, with the oldest able to trace their roots back to the 16th century. Public universities in Romania include the University of Bucharest, the University of Craiova and Ovidius University.
  • Private universities – There are over 30 private universities in Romania, all of which were established in the years following the Romanian revolution of 1989 and the subsequent economic reforms. These institutions include Spiru Haret University, Artifex University and Romanian-American University.

Language of instruction

The official language of Romania is Romanian, and as such this is the dominant language of tuition in Romania’s universities.

Many universities in Romania also offer a selection of courses taught in English, which helps if you are an international student who does not have Romanian language skills. For example, the University of Bucharest offers 8 bachelor’s degrees and 45 masters degrees taught in English.

Popular student cities in Romania

  • Cluj-Napoca – Located in the north west of the country, Cluj-Napoca is the second largest city in Romania, and is home to a large student population. It boasts excellent nightlife, clubs and culture along with a beautiful old town. The city has several universities, including Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Cluj-Napoca and Babes-Bolyai University.
  • Timişoara – Based in the west of Romania in the Banat region, Timişoara boasts some stunning architecture and bears some resemblance to the Austrian city of Vienna. Whilst it is a very pleasant location to visit as a tourist, it is also home to several universities, including West University of Timisoara and University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Timisoara.
  • Bucharest – Towards the south of the country lies its capital city, Bucharest. With inviting culture, impressive architecture and many points of interest, Bucharest is heavily visited by tourists in Romania. It is also home to many of the nation’s universities, including the University of Bucharest, Politehnica University of Bucharest and Titu Maiorescu University.
